Andrea Willert, OMC Co-Inventor, shares her story…
“In 1999, my 78-year-old mother fell and broker her femur. To fix the break, she underwent orthopedic surgery to install metal plates and screw implants. Shortly afterwards she began learning to walk again, but things were never going to be the same.
Her sessions with the physical therapist were agonizing. Despite medication, she often complained about the intense and constant pain. Her therapist tried to motivate her with these familiar words, “No pain, no gain.” Eventually she developed a deformity on her leg from a loosening implant screw pushing on her skin. Within a single day of this development, she was crippled.
We consulted with her orthopedist and were crushed to learn that the fastener had total failure only days before she was scheduled for a second surgery to attempt repair of the loosened screw. Then things took a second turn for the worse; the pain and stress caused a debilitating stoke, paralyzing half her body.
My loving, wonderful and attentive mother was now restricted to her bed and required 24/7 care. My sister and I visited her everyday hoping for a miracle as we watched her petite body wither over the next eight years.” — Andrea Willert
